The Gap We Saw

Traditional tattoo studios often miss what a tattoo can mean to someone with a traumatic background. The moment matters, but it usually goes undocumented, and the story behind the piece stays private, even when the person might want it told.

Trauma Ink exists to close that gap: to build storytelling into the tattoo process itself, for people who are ready and willing to share their journey in a supportive environment.

Why This, Why Missouri

The first tour runs across Missouri, where the need for mental health support is high and access has not kept pace, especially outside the cities.

The Two Pillars

01, The Studio

Mobile Tattoo Studio

A trauma-informed studio space that comes to where it's needed, rather than asking someone to walk into an unfamiliar shop. We're building it on a bloodmobile or ambulance-style vehicle for the built-in bloodborne pathogen safety and sanitation infrastructure: a serious, clinical foundation for a personal experience. Consent, confidentiality and pacing are designed in from the ground up, not bolted on afterward.

02, The Documentary

Documentary Series

A film series capturing the stories behind the sessions, made by filmmakers and storytellers working alongside the tattoo artist. For participants who want to share more, the vehicle includes "dashboard confessionals": a dedicated on-camera space to tell their story in their own words, entirely separate from the tattoo session itself.

How the Model Works

  1. 01

    Application

Someone interested in participating tells us their story and what they're considering. No commitment required to start the conversation.

  2. 02

    Selection & Consent

A careful selection process confirms participants are ready and willing. Every boundary set at this stage is honored throughout everything that follows.

  3. 03

    Session

The tattoo session happens in the mobile studio, on the road, documented only as much as the participant is comfortable with.

  4. 04

    The Series

Footage becomes part of the documentary series, shared on the participant's terms and never without their ongoing consent.

On the Road

Trauma Ink runs in 8-12 week tours. Between events, we guest-spot at partner tattoo studios along the route, which introduces us to their clients, gives them access to ours, and opens the door to guest artists joining us for events.

This only works if it's built on trust. Consent, confidentiality and respect for every participant's boundaries aren't a policy page here. They're the actual model.
